I'd hardly consider the Itanium as superior to anything. The whole thing about the EPIC architecture is that it gains a minimal speed gain as a result of die size shrinks as a result of moving all dynamic analysis algorithms off chip, while losing whatever backward ILP compatibility there is w/ previous generations. Also, w/ multi-core CPUs becoming the trend ever since XP merged the Windows 95 and NT branches, the reason to have any VLIW based architecture went away. So there is not even the theoretical. I ran OS/2 for a couple of years during its heyday in our shop.
EComStation is a reliable and secure operating system based on IBM OS/2 Warp. EComStation delivers a proven virus free, zero-downtime, OS/2 compatible operating environment for both industry and personal desktop use. EComStation runs all your existing OS/2 applications.
When I first jumped on the os2 train it took me 4 reps to even figure out what sku to get. Even then they were surprised I wanted to buy it at all. Then the install process was a horid mess I had to disable the cache to get 2.1 to install (~8 hour install time and sitting there waiting for 'next disk please'). *Most* computers out there did not run OS2 at all. I managed to get the first version of the eSC 2.2 install CD ISO, just before it was replaced by what appears to be an older version (not sure what that is all about, I wish I had not erased the first download). The first version did a pretty decent install into VBox (latest) under Win7. However, since it was, apparently, an incorrect installer, USB wouldn't work in VBox, and I decided to change some options, I tried the second ISO. Five times, and I still couldn't get it to install properly. I use the ISO in VBox, and it does check out okay. One of the problems was that I missed turning off the RPM/YUM junk (well hidden, in a not so obvious place).
So, back to the old default setup. ECS installed, without ACPI, without SMP, and it somehow identified the virtual Intel gigabit NIC as an IBM NIC. Even eCS 2.1 got that right. On to the real machines. First attempt was on an old machine.

Message, because Uniaud failed to load. This sort of works in eCS 2.1, but I need to use the later version of Uniaud, or it won't load (doesn't work properly anyway). Pressing Enter does nothing. Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing. I guess it is power off, and start again, leaving sound out of it, but not today, I have other things that need to be done. However, a few minimal files for VDM are always installed. (It is the IBM installer that does this automatically.) We've found that there is no way around this, as they are required by some core OS components (I believe GRADD requires VDM support; IIRC something else does too, possibly APM or somesuch).

I am really undecided about eCS 2.2, and the way that it installs. Well we had slight hick up:-( We put the ISO online at 16:00 hours Amsterdam. But at 22:30 we withdrawn the ISO. As I type this a new one is being uploaded. We discovered what I would call a critical defect. The defect was in the fact that when installed to hard disc the two files os2 boot usbohcd.sys and usbehcd.sys where still the IBM version. We missed ONE pack file in which the files are. Os2image disk_5 usb was correct.
About our implementation support Over 90% of our customers install eComStation themselves, without additional support. We support legacy IBM OS/2 installations.

We've found that there is no way around this, as they are required by some core OS components (I believe GRADD requires VDM support; IIRC something else does too, possibly APM or somesuch). Java 1.1.8 is now always installed. This was discussed a couple of years ago in a problem ticket, although I don't have the reference handy.
So yes, OS/2 had some problems - not the least of which was it was by IBM which always knows best, better than any customers and IBM does things that IBM wants to do not what you want to do - but in terms of 'this is old junk I don't know why people use it!' It's no better or worse than anything else. No, it's a lot worse. The interface is crap.
Those of us who do support on systems from many different clients really don't wonder why they still exist. HURD is one thing; we don't really wonder why it's stillborn.
I am looking at a just recovered 'Vista Home Premium' Toshiba laptop with 1.73 GHz 'Genuine Intel(R) CPU', 1 GB RAM and a 120 GB HD sitting on my desk running a defrag before being returned. This is a fresh install to 'factory condition' with updates applied to clean it up for transfer to someone else from the original owner. It is DOG SLOW, even with a 'factory condition' reinstall just completed to a wiped HD! I agree with everything you said. Even after service packing, Vista uses too much memory. It was too much OS too soon. I too have a slow laptop (1.2 GHz amd64) but with 2GB RAM and a 160 GB or maybe even 250 GB slow as molasses disk and Vista is still the pits.

This was discussed a couple of years ago in a problem ticket, although I don't have the reference handy. Certain system components and configuration tools simply do not work stably with any later version of Java.
