One method of determining if your Epiphone guitar was made by Samick is its serial number. There may or may not be a factory code. There may be no factory designator for some models made in 1993 and earlier years. Like Epiphones, Samick instruments generally start with an “S”. For example S3021234 is indicative of Samick-S-1993-3.

'The guitars begin as Artcore flamed maple bodies in China and then travel to Japan for fitting with 3pc maple/mahogany Ibanez necks and Super 58 humbuckers and then finished. Then they're shipped to the states where they're inspected and set-up by Ibanez USA quality control in Bensalem, Pennsylvania and Idaho Falls, Idaho. The result is pro playability and tone in the $1300 range, which in full and semi-acoustics is an achievement we are very proud of.' Three different Artcore United models will be offered. The traditional-sized AF195 and the slightly smaller AG195 are true full-hollow bodies, which list for $1329.00.

Plate serial numbers have nothing to do with headstock serial numbers. In a case where a guitar has both the true serial number will always be the headstock number. Plate numbers usually follow the pattern of the first 2 digits denoting year of production followed by a 4 digit number that denotes consecutive production for that model for that year, or consecutive production number for that particular model from the models inception. In cases where generic non model specific plates are used the 4 digit number is just the consecutive number of that plate which could have made it on possibly 10 different models.

An example that proves that before 1987 letters were NOT used (or at least not used in all factories) to express what month the guitar was built: 83061540H was used for a V-310 from one of our members. It is possible that 06 means June here. Don't know about the H.

Pinning these guitars down to closer than a 2 year window would be tough. This actually makes alot of sense from a manufacturing stance as they no longer had to order plates that denoted year of production and could just order consecutive numbered plates without care to year. They would no longer be restricted to using a specific plate in a specific year and any batch of plates would be good forever. JS - JS series guitars built in Japan have a neck plate that is stamped with a consecutive number since production first began with no indication of date. They are termed J plates because of a J prefix in the number but somewhere around J 002700 they dropped the J leaving just the 6 digit number. Plate number J 000001 is on a 93' Donnie that I will always consider Jim Donahue's guitar, now residing in the Hoshino USA collection.

Affinity [ ] The Squier lineup was augmented in 1996 with Affinity series guitars and basses. Entry-level Affinity Series instruments were straightforward, basic Stratocaster, Telecaster and Precision Bass guitars in black, red and white. The Affinity Series paved the way for the subsequent great success of Squier instrument/amp/accessory packages, such as the Strat Pak and Bass Pak, that provided aspiring musicians with everything they need to enter the world of amplified music in a single all-in-one purchase.

August 31, 1987 However, as 1990 approached, the use of one digit for the year presented the issue of repeat serial numbers. Around this time, the serial numbers became a bit unpredictable, as they were figuring out a new system. The 'S' prefix also first appeared at this time. There are exceptions to this rule as each Asian vendor uses their own variation on this serial numbering scheme however rule of YYMMXXXX applies in general. As far as the letters go, they denote the manufacturer. I've always been under the impression that this is confidential information but I will check to see if it's appropriate for me to post the info here. Bearin mind that all of this applies only to guitars manufactured from 1978 on as that is when the current owners began producing instruments under the washburn name.
